My name is Tina Hobin and I am affectionately described “as the mother of the belly dance” and a great inspiration to women
In the early 1970’s I pioneered Middle Eastern dance in the UK, not only as a beautiful art form but as a safe and effective way of improving women’s health and general well being.
My aims have always been to inspire people to overcome common health problems and keep fit irrespective of age, size, health or fitness levels, particularly those who are over 60.
Exercise as you age is extremely important as it helps loosen stiff joints improve balance, coordination, and stamina. It stimulates the body’s healing process, helping to promote a longer life expectancy and independence in old age.
Forty two years ago I pioneered the belly dance in the UK as a unique form of fitness for women, the aim being to enhance their self awareness.
Understand the importance of a gentle exercise such as the belly dance. The movements of the dance are based on the natural structure of the body and help to move the body as it is designed to move without stress or strain.
Unfortunately the term belly dance puts people off. Hollywood promoted the dance as a titillating sexual dance, instead of a beautiful art form and as the oldest child birth preparation in the world.
I am recognised as one of the most famous exponents of the dance, acknowledged as an authority on the subject in the UK and overseas through performing, writing, and teaching and have a reputation for being one of the most patient and consistent fun loving tutors.
During the past 40+ years I have maintained a high profile through my numerous TV and radio appearances and press coverage from my appearances performing, lecturing and demonstrating belly dancing.
I wrote the first ever UK book on Belly dancing – “Belly Dancing For Health And Relaxation”, first published by Duckworth in 1982, second impression 1994, third impression 1998, followed by ‘Belly Dance’” “the dance of mother earth," A History of the Dance, published by Marion Boyars October 2003. 2011. Now available on e-books.
My latest book is “ Belly Dance for Health happiness and Empowerment” was launched 28 -8-2015 and I also write a monthly column for the health page ‘Woman To Woman’ for the Kidderminster Times/Shuttle.
