Safe At Home

Safe At Home, Gloucestershire works in partnership with the County Council and local authorities together with NHS Gloucestershire. We provide a vital service that helps older or vulnerable people and people with disabilities to remain living in their homes by ensuring they are in good repair and adapted for their needs.

Our services include: information, signposting and practical help with housing repairs, improvements; renovations and adaptations which support independent living at home; small repairs service for minor adaptations to help people to live more safely.

We also offer confidential advice, and support -

  • advice on housing options and helping you decide which is best for you
  • advice and information about grants and benefits and funding for works
  • help accessing other local support services

On your behalf we can manage any works carried out in your home, for example drawing up plans, obtaining estimates and liaising with contractors, council grant officers and occupational therapists.

Safe at Home's Handyperson Service

  • Minor adaptations:- supplying and fitting grab rails, handrails bannister rails, ramps
  • Minor Plumbing, joinery and electrical work
  • Small Repairs, e.g. replacing tap washers, cistern repairs
  • Supplying and fitting security equipment and keysafes, replacing broken panes of glass

We will provide quotations free of charge and you are under no obligation to proceed. Our hourly charge is £18 incl. VAT but some services may be provided free of charge in certain circumstances.

Home Improvement Service

If people are to continue living independently in their own homes into old age they need a broad range of support services which may include elements of social care-services, healthcare-services, housing repairs and maintenance, telecare-services, aids and adaptations.

Mears Home Improvement, which has local operations around the country, provides a practical range of services, including handyman, home adaptations, repairs, safety checks, signposting to services and advice on accessing benefits and grants.

Home Improvement services are provided under an agreement with the Local Authority which monitors the service quality and delivery. It is a low cost - and in some circumstances no cost - solution for older people, or people with disabilities. People who are no longer able to fully maintain their homes, or who need the installation of specialist equipment to enhance their independence.

Mears Home Improvement works in close conjunction with local professionals in the housing, care-services and healthcare-services sectors, such as Occupational Therapists, and with charities and support groups for people with specific needs.

Major Adaptations and Repairs

We offer free visits to your home to discuss your needs; you are under no obligation to proceed with any work discussed. Services:

  • Our Technical Officers can provide plans, drawings and a design service
  • Obtaining quotations
  • Level access showers/wet rooms
  • Stairlifts, ramps and steps
  • Kitchen design and refits
  • Ceiling track hoist installation
  • Garage conversions, extensions, replacement windows and doors
  • Other work that will help you to continue to live independently at home

We provide full written quotations for our work and no work will be undertaken without your written permission.

Advice and signposting

We provide confidential advice on a wide range of issue including:

  • Helping you understand the options and choices available to you
  • Funding information and assistance
  • Information about availability of grants
  • Energy Efficiency
  • Advice on safety and security
  • Support and equipment for people with Sensory Impairments

Home from Hospital service

This service is designed to enable people to leave hospital, following injury, surgery or illness, by ensuring their home is made fit for purpose for their current or future needs. we liaise with healthcare professionals, such as occupational therapists, where necessary.

  • Free visits/advice
  • Practical assistance with supplying and fitting equipment to support independent living
  • Help with obtaining relevant benefits/grants
  • Signposting to other organisations and services that offer support

Telecare

The provision of aids and adaptations through its Home Improvement service is Mears response to fully joined up local services that empower individuals to live independently at home with the minimum intervention required.

Rapid response to repair or adaptation needs can help get someone home from hospital sooner, or reduce the number or length of home care-services visits, leading to significant cost reductions as well as giving a greater sense of dignity and independence to the individual.

As well as practical home adaptations such as the installation of adapted bathrooms and kitchens, ramps and grab rails, Mears can source and install personal aids. We are also introducing new technologies that enhance independence such as telecare-services and sensors to provide round the clock reassurance for vulnerable people and their families.
