Mothers' Union Diocese of Worcester

About us

In the Diocese of Worcester we aim to give practical help to assist families, whoever they are. We work both around the world and around the corner

It has been said that The Mothers’ Union is one of the country’s best kept secrets. You never hear our name mentioned when news comes through about famine and disaster and war torn countries… Why is that? .......... Because we are there already!

With over 4 million members in 83 countries the Mothers’ Union has always quietly provided the peoples with the support they need.  As they need it and where they need it through local networks although financed from our world wide resources.

Did you know that we have 4,000 members in Bagdad who daily risk their lives by taking help to those who need it regardless of faith. Did you know that we are currently quietly working to ease the situation for many families in the South Sudan?

Our projects in the community

The Mothers Union has around 44 separate groups within the Diocese of Worcester and also has a number of Diocesan Members.

Each group assists with work undertaken across the Diocese of Worcester but also undertakes local projects according to need. Our work is diverse and fruitful and includes:-

  • Providing resources for Prison Chaplaincies.
  • Making recycled cards for prisoners to send to their children, supplying around 5000 cards per year
  • Supporting prisoners’ Families at the Prison Visitor Centre at HMP Hewell
  • Making and supply welcome baby packs for new babies visiting their fathers in prison
  • We make beautiful gowns and bonnets for premature babies and gowns for stillborn babies.

This is sensitive work carried out with compassion and caring.

  • Providing prayer shawls for infirm and terminally ill people to give comfort.
  • Supporting people in Refuges who have fled from Domestic Violence.
  • Attending Marriage Fairs and participate with marriage Preparation materials.
  • We also support families who are seeking baptism
  • Supporting couples seeking a Church wedding
  • Providing holidays for families who are in need of a break 'Away From It All' Holidays are provided by most dioceses for families under stress and unable to fund their own holiday. Many dioceses have their own caravans funded by members, like this one owned by Mothers' Union Diocese of Worcester.

New work includes supporting new teenage mothers

Participating in 'Open the Book' in schools

  • Having a presence in schools where  domestic crafts are learned by primary school children, where resources are provided for families, and  participating schools sharing in our world wide links.
  • Currently the Mothers’ Union in this Diocese, is linked with 4 Dioceses in Uganda, 2 in Nigeria, South Africa and the Phillipines. It is planned that participating schools will have natural and meaningful contacts and information from these diverse areas in the world.

The Mothers’ Union is much, much more than this and really the only way to find out about us is to talk to us to see how we could be of assistance where you live and hear what else we are doing in the Diocese elsewhere.
