Herefordshire Family History Society

About Us

The Herefordshire Family History Society is a member of the Federation of Family History Societies and West Midlands Area Group, and was founded in 1980.

It exists to encourage and help those interested in Genealogy and Family History in the County and Diocese of Hereford.

Advice on how to approach the search for ancestors, and how to locate local sources of information is provided on request.

Meetings

Meetings are held on the third Friday of each month at: The Kindle Centre, Belmont Road, Hereford,

Meeting place is open at 7-00pm.

Meetings usually comprise a talk by a guest speaker covering various aspects of Family History research, or related topics, followed by an opportunity to meet other members.

The Society has an extensive library, which is available to members at meetings, together with journals of other societies which are received on an exchange basis.

Books published by the Federation, and others, are available from the Bookstall, along with various publications on  CD.

Journal

The Society Journal is published quarterly and is distributed to all members. The Editor is always pleased to receive original articles for publication, about research or on related subjects.

Research Interests of new members are published as soon as possible after joining and many contacts have been made with others researching the same name, or in some instances, the same family.

Strays Index

This is an index of events, Baptisms, Marriages, Burials etc ­naming Herefordshire people, which have been found in other areas. This is regularly added to, and enquiries are welcomed.

Monumental Inscriptions

Many thousands of Gravestones have already been recorded and work is proceeding, on a regular basis, by our members to record those remaining. A complete list of those published on CD is available, also an index of all published MI’s is available on CD.

Marriage Indexes

Members of the Society have compiled an index of marriages in the County and Diocese from earliest registers in existence, in some cases 1538, up to the commencement of Civil Registration in 1837.

An index has also been compiled for Marriages between 1837 and 1957, which is also available on CD.

Society Projects

The 1851, 1891 and 1901 Census Indexes for Herefordshire have been published on CD.

Burial Index

A Burial Index has been produced for the period 1813-1839 from information contained in parish registers and is available for purchase on CD.

The earlier registers are being worked on at monthly sessions at Hereford Record Office.

Volunteers always welcome.

Exchange Journals

The Society exchanges journals with other Societies, in the UK and overseas, these are available for loan to members at meetings.

Exhibitions

The Society exhibits at other Family History Fairs throughout the Midlands and Wales and locally in and around the County.

Research Meetings

Throughout the year we hold dedicated research evenings which are open to all who wish to come and access our indexes.

Volunteering

All our projects are run on a volunteer basis, all help is welcome, contact the Secretary for details.
